Buttle Area Update

Gerry Roberts sends this note on Strathcona Park conditions regarding a couple of the Highway 28 trails:
"The road into the Kings Peak trail head is still covered by deep snow and has not been checked for windfalls yet. When I checked on Friday the glacier was deeply covered and had massive cornice threats from above.

Parking lots still snowed in at Crest Crags and the Elk River trail with possible parking at Lady Falls."
Thanks for the update!

From February to April

Photographer Tim Penney has sent some photos comparing the snow levels this past season at the Strathcona Park Wilderness Centre.

This photo from April 15 shows the snow recently cleared from around the building.

This photo from February 29 shows the maximum height the snow reached during the winter.
In 2011 the snow was over the roof of the building!

Buttle Area Report

Gerry Roberts, volunteer host of the Buttle Lake Info Hut for Strathcona Wilderness Institute, has sent a report of the latest conditions from that area of Strathcona Park.

Buttle Lake at Augerpoint looking south

Campgrounds at Buttle Lake
Open, some snow on roads and campsites but many clear, not much wind debris. Lots of snow at the campground boat launch, 4 wheel drive would be advisable.
Darkis Lake trail mostly clear of snow and has very few windfalls.
Ralph River - Open, perimeter road has snow patches but 4 Wheel Drive is not required; the across campground roads have deeper snow and some windfalls. There are plenty of sites free or almost free of snow.
The Buttle Lake boat launch and the one at Karst Creek are clear of snow. Both sites had people camping today. (Apr. 7)

Winter Lingers

Spring is still a long way away  for Paradise Meadows - at least 1.5 m of snow fell in the last two weeks, resulting in a snowbase of over 6.7 m at  sub-alpine elevations.
This is in-between the levels seen in 2010 and 2011 so it now looks like the meadows snow might linger till the end of June this summer.
