Mt. Albert Edward, Mt. Regan & Jutland peek out above the fog
By mid-morning the fog lifted, the bugs diminished & it was back to warm sun.
Visitors today were from BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, as well as England, Wales, Holland, and Japan. Notable visitors were Hans Roemer & Judith Holm, authors of Alpine Flowers of Vancouver Island, a bestseller at the Centre.
The Parks Facility Operator today confirmed a sighting of a cougar, in the upper meadows near the old trailhead (junction of the new Centennial Trail & the older Paradise Meadows Boardwalk), seen late Sat. evening. The cougar ran off upon hearing the hikers, which is a good thing. The mama bear & 2 cubs seem to be at home in the area - last reported on Sat. Aug. 1 south of Lake Helen Mackenzie. A reminder, do not approach wildlife - hike in a group, make noise while hiking to avoid surprises, keep your pets on a leash (or for their safety & yours, leave them at home), give wild animals a wide berth & leave the area. Here is a link to an info brochure that can be printed for reference.
The participants on the guided Level 2 Hike to Mt. Elma enjoyed great views & even an afternoon swim - thanks to Rolf & Heather who know the area well. Donations for the programs are greatly appreciated & go towards ongoing operations of the Centre.
The white rhododendrons seem to be everywhere now, and the cottongrass and bunchberry continue to attract many photographers.
A couple of lost & found items - a key to a bicycle lock perhaps? and unfortunately, a broken Graco stroller/trailer , which had been tossed in the bushes, apparently, after a wheel broke! this is a completely unacceptable way to treat our beautiful wilderness park - but many thanks to the father & son who hauled it out & delivered it to us at the Centre for disposal.
Our volunteers from afar have arrived! Thanks to Linda for giving them a tour around the boardwalk. More news about them on Tuesday!
