Support from MEC

Strathcona Wilderness Institute is excited to receive support from Mountain Equipment Coop for the upcoming Strathcona Park Wilderness Centre Nature Programs. SWI applied for funds to expand the information about Strathcona Park and Paradise Meadows available to visitors and community groups; and to expand the SPWC program of volunteer involvement.

MEC strives to demonstrate leadership in both self-propelled recreation and sustainability, and  fulfills this role in part by supporting like-minded organizations such as ours.

Many SWI activities are already posted on the calendar at the bottom of the page - stay tuned for more details of our summer programs!

New Book Released!

Exciting news today: Lindsay Elms' new book on the mountains has just been released!   "Above the Bush: a Century of Climbing on Vancouver Island, 1912-2012" is a great follow-up to his previous book, "Beyond Nootka".

This book contains transcripts of journal entries, diaries and newspaper accounts of early ascents of some of the most prominent mountains on Vancouver Island; as well as the climbing history of many important mountains to the climbing community.

"In Above the Bush, Lindsay Elms has amassed an outstanding collection of information on the history of mountaineering on Vancouver Island, a saga of which he was an integral part", says author Dick Culbert.

"This book paints a vivid picture of Vancouver Island's beautiful and rugged mountains, and the adventurers who climb them," says Cedric Zala of the Vancouver Island section of the Alpine Club of Canada.

Copies of the new book as well as Beyond Nootka can be ordered through Lindsay's website.   The cover features an original watercolour by Cumberland BC artist Clive Powsey.
